MS Talk
All who wished to give feedback on their daily health were given the opportunity to do so.
One member talked about her holiday to Jamaica and the MS doctor she met. The doctor advised her on benefits of removing dairy products and wheat from her diet and recommended regular acupressure. Acupressure is a healing method that involves applying pressure to certain meridian points on the body to relieve pain.
An alternative is Acupuncture which involves pricking the skin or tissues with needles, used to alleviate pain.
Another member recommended a place in Central London where they do acupressure. For more information you can call: 020 7631 0156 or check the website: www.haleclinic.com.

The Chair updated members with latest information on drug treatments for MS:
Vicodin Drug- treats pain relief. In America an MS patient became addicted to it and as a result she needed to detoxify her body of the drug.
Gilenya (Fingolimod) Drug- the drug has not been approved by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). They say it's not cost effective enough. Norma highlighted there is a good article about the drug in MS Matters Magazine. For more on this please follow link: http://www.mssociety.org.uk/ms-news/2012/01/ms-pill-gilenya-undergoing-safety-review
Frampridine (Fampyra) Drug- the new drug has been launched for people with MS who have difficulty walking. Late stage trials have shown the drug can improve walking speed in some people with MS by up to 25%.
Members were referred to an interesting BBC article on Vitamin D and MS To read the article please click on the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16086004
Regular information on drugs and research can be obtained from the Bi monthly E bulletin if you would like copies to be sent to you don't hesitate to contact the office: 0208 8846 330 or email nana@shaneproject.org.uk
The Need for more members
The Chair pleaded with everyone to promote The Shane Project amongst people with MS, family members, and their carers. The Shane Project (TSP hereafter) needs to meet targets with our funder, Big Lottery and our funding with them finishes next year 2013. We need to recruit 100 new people every year, and only recruited 63 last year. Anyone with MS, their families and carers were urged to call or email to register their details.
The Need for more members
Members were informed about the urgent need for volunteers. TSP will be looking into recruiting volunteers from the probation service and Air Cadets. If you would like to volunteer with The Shane Project, please contact us on 0208 8846 330 or email: nana@shanproject.org.uk.
