MS Talk
A member raised an issue regarding difficulties faced with hospital transport in Haringey. When an appointment had been made the transport went to the wrong address and the member ended up missing the appointment. A member advised that they complain through PALS service at the hospital.
Members were advised that the best way to keep informed and up to date about changes with services is to attend relevant meetings. Information about meetings and consultations are sent regularly from the office to members and it is good to respond. Also members can contact Enfield Carers Centre in Enfield which has useful information and services.
Members were informed of the MS Research Day taking place at the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood on the 23rd June 2012 (1.30-4pm).
Nutrition session Speaker – Tola Kolawole
Tola spoke about various means of planning meals ahead of time, cooking and shopping in order to save money whilst also enjoying nutritious foods. Members were asked if they had any questions. A member queried regarding fat retained in the dietary system after a fry-up. Tola advised on grilling food to cut down on fat for a healthy diet and recommended use of oil spray for cooking. Making large portions of food, dividing and freezing saves time and energy.
Topic of discussion – Living Independently, Speaker - David Heard
David introduced himself as Head of the organisation 'Sportability'. People with MS can still get back to doing an activity they did before developing the condition. David coaches paralysed people in activities such as sailing, scuba diving, archery and riding quad bikes. Learning a new sport you would not have considered doing even before you had MS boosts a person's self-esteem and gives them hope. It is free to join.
Quiz Night
The Shane Project Quiz Night will be held on September 29th. Members were informed that more volunteers are very much needed to help out on the day of the Quiz. If anyone knows any friends or family relatives who would like to help in roles such as setting up, scoring, ushering, serving food, adjudicating, issuing tickets and cooking please get in touch.
